In 13 days, we created a beautiful sanctuary in West Oakland with 16residents & 6 homes. Folks who lived there went into recovery and stayed clean and sober during the 13 days. We had a portapotties, two solar showers, 24 kitchen, provision distribution, health & wellness services, container garden, out door living room for anyone in need. Our services were used by hundreds of Oakkand’s unsheltered and hungry looking for support, safety and community. We also had general assemblies everyday for any and all who wanted to discuss and build on solutions for the housing crisis and homeless state of emergency. This bold and beautiful action forced city officials to FINALLY discuss and do something about what was happening in The Town, and began a major shift on changing the narrative around our curbside communities, housing being a human right and the need to decriminalize homelessness.
